Rather than write an email in reply, I made a video on painting gorgeous greys in soft pastel as I thought my answer would benefit many pastel artists.<\/p>\n<p>Take a look!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3O0LxvV3BRU\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, I like to layer complementary colours to create vibrant and interesting greys. Why pick up a grey pastel when you have this option?!<\/p>\n<p>Here are the final 50 shades of gorgeous greys:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6793\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6793\" style=\"width: 2748px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6793 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender.jpg\" alt=\"50 shades of gorgeous greys\" width=\"2748\" height=\"2098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender.jpg 2748w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-768x586.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-1024x782.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-624x476.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2748px) 100vw, 2748px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I love the way you can see the pure saturated colours of the sticks above the box in which they are layered and where they neutralize each other&#8217;s brightness.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To make grey, you need the three primary colours &#8211; red, blue, and yellow &#8211; plus white. Mix all of these together in various amounts and you get greys &#8211; hundreds of them! Some will lean to the warm side while others will be cool. You can run through the whole value spectrum from black to the palest of greys. Mixing complementary colours (red\/green, blue\/orange, purple\/yellow) will do the same thing as between them, there&#8217;s some combination of the three primaries.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s much easier to achieve these gorgeous greys with paint &#8211; just squeeze tubes and mix the colours on your palette. In soft pastels, things work a bit differently. Layering takes the place of mixing on the palette and so your grey may not be as perfectly achromatic as when you mix with paints. Still you will end up with a more neutral colour than each stick on its own! And it&#8217;s these combinations that make for an infinite variation of vibrant gorgeous greys. I get excited just writing about them!<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close-up:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6792\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6792\" style=\"width: 2888px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6792 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg\" alt=\"A close-up of the gorgoeus greys!\" width=\"2888\" height=\"2279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2.jpg 2888w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-768x606.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-1024x808.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/FullSizeRender-2-624x492.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2888px) 100vw, 2888px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6792\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aren&#8217;t these just yummy?!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Don&#8217;t just use this technique for obviously grey subjects like a grey wall or grey clouds. Anytime a colour doesn&#8217;t shout out at you like a red stop sign, you are probably looking at some form of grey whether very neutralized ie &#8216;grey&#8217; or just off the pure colour.<\/p>\n<p>And greys will make your colour accents pop! Just look at the colour swatches above their greyed counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of reaching for a grey or neutral pastel, why not try layering two complementary colours. Try it out and let me know how your experiments go!
