{"id":29166,"date":"2023-12-22T20:47:57","date_gmt":"2023-12-23T04:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/?p=29166"},"modified":"2023-12-22T20:47:59","modified_gmt":"2023-12-23T04:47:59","slug":"the-hidden-beauty-in-the-mundane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/2023\/12\/the-hidden-beauty-in-the-mundane\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hidden Beauty In The Mundane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As I was reminded recently by a dear friend, as artists, we possess <a href=\"https:\/\/www.howtopastel.com\/2020\/08\/seeing-with-an-artists-eye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a unique gift<\/a>\u2014the ability to perceive the extraordinary within the ordinary, to see the hidden beauty that can lie in the mundane fabric of our existence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then in our creations, we reveal to others the light and colour we&#8217;ve seen, offering glimpses of the profound in the seemingly trivial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the kind of depth with which we artists see.\u00a0These thoughts had me turn to Mary Oliver&#8217;s poem, <em>Gratitude<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In her poem, Oliver invites us to engage in a reflection on the elements of our lives that often go unnoticed. Through her keen observations, she prompts us to ask ourselves: What did we notice today? What did we hear, admire, find astonishing, and wish to see again? In these contemplative verses, she weaves a tapestry of gratitude, celebrating the hidden beauty in the details that can escape our hurried attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we approach the turning of the year, I urge you to consider the transformative power of a daily reckoning\u2014taking a moment to pause, observe, and be grateful for the small marvels in the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">*****<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Gratitude <\/em>by Mary Oliver<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What did you notice?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dew-snail; the low-flying sparrow;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the bat, on the wind, in the dark;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>big-chested geese, in the V of sleekest performance;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the soft toad, patient in the hot sand;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the sweet-hungry ants; the uproar of mice in the empty house;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the tin music of the cricket\u2019s body;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the blouse of the goldenrod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What did you hear?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thrush greeting the morning;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the little bluebirds in their hot box;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the salty talk of the wren,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>then the deep cup of the hour of silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When did you admire?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oaks, letting down their dark and hairy fruit;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the carrot, rising in its elongated waist;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the onion, sheet after sheet, curved inward to the pale green wand;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>at the end of summer the brassy dust, the almost liquid beauty of the flowers;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>then the ferns, scrawned black by the frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What astonished you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The swallows making their dip and turn over the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What would you like to see again?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My dog: her energy and exuberance, her willingness, her language beyond all nimbleness of tongue, her recklessness, her loyalty, her sweetness, her strong legs, her curled black lip, her snap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What was most tender?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queen Anne\u2019s lace, with its parsnip root;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the everlasting in its bonnets of wool;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the kinks and turns of the tupelo\u2019s body;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the tall, blank banks of sand;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the clam, clamped down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What was most wonderful?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sea, and its wide shoulders;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the sea and its triangles;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the sea lying back on its long athlete\u2019s spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What did you think was happening?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The green beast of the hummingbird;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the eye of the pond;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the wet face of the lily;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the bright, puckered knee of the broken oak;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the red tulip of the fox\u2019s mouth;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>the up-swing, the down-pour, the frayed sleeve of the first snow\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>so the gods shake us from our sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">*****<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d love to hear your thoughts about the poem and how it may have affected you.
